Arthur Ashe’s Retirement Anniversary

On this very day, 35 years ago, legendary tennis player and activist Arthur Ashe announced his retirement from professional tennis. Having suffered a heart attack and undergone bypass surgery as a result, Ashe was forced to put a halt to his athletic career. But that did little to slow him down.

A fearless and passionate individual, Ashe devoted himself entirely to his athletic career, whilst active, as well as his off-court efforts surrounding issues of health, disease prevention, education and racial inequality. He will forever be remembered by those whose lives he touched, and his contributions to society, politics and the game of tennis will continue to survive for generations to come.
